2. Head Assembly: Straightening

What is the Head Assembly?
The head assembly consists of the parts sticking out from the belt as shown in the image below.

When to Check the Head Assembly?
If the head assembly crashes into any object. If the head assembly is not straight, the laser beam can be out of alignment, causing reduced or no cutting power.

How to Check/Straighten the Head Assembly?

Tools required:

  • An engineers square (or another object with a perfect 90 degree angle).
  • A 2.5mm hex tool/allen key.

Instructions:

  1. Move the laser head to roughly the center of the bed.

  2. Additonal Check: If your head assembly has crashed, check that the autofocus pin is perfectly straight. Replace the autofocus pin if it is even slightly bent - see this article for more information.

  3. Additonal Check: If your head assembly has crashed, check that the conical nozzle at the bottom of the head assembly is screwed in tightly. It is just a threaded cone that screws up into the head assembly.

  4. Lower the honeycomb bed and lay some flat material on the bed (if your honeycomb bed is damaged in certain areas, use an area of the bed that is undamaged).

Place the engineers square on the flat material, and rest against the flat nozzle section. See the images below for guidance.

  5. Check if the head assembly is square to the bed. The image below shows an example of the head assembly being off square. If you can see gaps at the top or bottom between the square and the head assembly then this will need to be rectified.

  6. To correct the angle, partially unscrew one of the highlighted screws in the image below just enough to allow some movement to pivot the head assembly. Pivot the head assembly so that it is square to the bed and retighten the screws. These should be tight, but be careful not to overtighten as this may strip the thread.

If loosening one screw does not give you enough movement, try instead tightening this screw and loosening the other one. If you still cannot get enough movement, unscrew both screws and then make the head assembly straight.
