The TechSoft/Roland RotoCAMM TS-30 machine was discontinued back when 32-bit Windows XP was the current operating system. This was long before 64-bit Windows systems were in existence, and long before current Windows operating systems.
Workarounds are available to get a Windows Printer Driver to work and connect to the machine on both 32-bit Windows Vista and both 32 and 64-bit Windows 7.
This machine is long out of support. TechSoft no longer have a machine and so are unable to test this with the latest operating systems. If you are able to get the machine to work successfully on newer Windows versions we would love to hear from you to improve this guide for other users.
Important Note About MDX-40 and MDX-40A
This page relates to the TS-30 model only. Do not use this page for the Roland MDX-40 or MDX-40A, even though the machines look similar.
Software Overview
CAD/CAM Software
The software package TechSoft Design V3 (formerly called 2D Design V2), can be used to create and output designs directly to the TS-30. It only requires the Windows Printer Driver to be installed.
Original Software CD
You can download the original software CD that came with the TS-30 from the link below.
All the other Roland software provided with the TS‐30 machine apart from the Windows Driver, e.g., Virtual Modela, 3D Engrave, etc. can still be installed and run on newer Windows systems.
DO NOT INSTALL THE WINDOWS DRIVER FROM THIS DOWNLOAD! - See sections below.
The remainder of this article is about trying to install the Windows Printer Driver for different versions of Windows.
Windows Printer Driver
How to Find Out What Windows Version You Have Installed?
It is important that you install the correct printer driver for the version of Windows you are running. If you are unsure which version you have, find out by choosing Windows Start Menu > Control Panel > System and Security > System.
The Windows edition and the System type (e.g. 32/64‐bit Operating System) will be shown.
Definitely Works
Possibly Works
We have heard customers use the machine using these steps, but they are not tested by TechSoft.
After clicking the download button, choose Save as and save the file in a convenient place on your computer.
The file will be zipped. Click on it with the Right Hand mouse button and choose Extract All.
A folder will be created with the same name as the zipped file and the extracted files will be found within the folder.
Click on Windows Start Menu > Devices and Printers then click Add printer (on the bar at the top).
Choose Add a local printer.
Choose Use an existing port and select LPT1: Printer Port (do not choose USB here). Click Next.
Click on Have Disk... then browse to the file RDMDX40.INF which will be found in a sub‐folder of the folder that you created in step 3.
Click Open then click OK.
Choose Roland MDX‐40 from the list then click Next.
Accept the Printer name Roland MDX‐40 by clicking Next.
At the prompt choose Install this driver software anyway.
Once the printer driver has installed, choose Do not share this printer and click Next.
Choose whether to Set as the default printer then click Finish.
Power up the RotoCAMM TS‐30 (power button at the front and the back of the machine) and connect it via a USB able to the computer.
A message Installing device driver software should appear. After a while a message Device driver software was not successfully installed will appear. Clicking on the message will show the following dialog box. Click Close.
Click on Windows Start Menu > Devices and Printers. The Roland MDX‐40 printer driver should appear in the Printers and Faxes section and the TS‐30 should appear in the Unspecified section. Right click on the TS‐30 icon and choose Properties.
Choose the Hardware tab then click on Properties then Change Settings.
Choose the Driver tab then click on Update Driver….
Choose Browse my computer for driver software then Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.
Highlight Printers then click Next. Select the Manufacturer Roland and the Printer Roland MDX‐40 then click Next.
Click Yes to the warning prompt and the Roland MDX‐40 printer driver should be successfully assigned to your TS‐30.
Click Close.
Close all windows then click on Windows Start Menu > Devices and Printers.
The TS‐30 should now have disappeared from the Unspecified devices section, the "Roland MDX‐40" printer driver will remain and on most systems a new printer driver "Roland MDX‐40 (Copy 1)" will have appeared. (On a few systems only the Roland MDX‐40 printer driver will be present.)
Right click on the Roland MDX‐40 (Copy 1) printer icon (or Roland MDX‐40 printer icon if your system has no "Copy 1") and choose Printer Properties.
Rename the driver as Roland TS‐30 then click OK.
If you had a "Copy 1" you will still have the original Roland MDX‐40 printer icon (the one you created originally outputting to the Port LPT1) so you need to remove it. Do this by clicking on the Roland MDX‐40 printer icon with the RH mouse button then choosing Remove.
IMPORTANT: Power down the TS‐30, and the computer, and then restart them.
Output from TechSoft Design V3 or 2D Design V2 should now be possible via the usual File > CNC Output with the CNC device: RotoCAMM TS‐30 selected.
Windows 10 64-Bit Windows Printer Driver
Disclaimer
Getting the TS-30 working on Windows 10 64-bit is untested by TechSoft.
TechSoft's officially stance is that the TS-30 will not work on Windows 10.
The procedure listed here is to be followed at the owners risk. There is a real possibility that the firmware update will render the machine inoperable!
Why the Windows 7 64-bit method Doesn't Work
The procedure for using the TS-30 on Windows 7 64-bit involves installing the MDX-40 driver and reassigning the TS-30 to use the MDX-40 driver.
The problem is that Windows 10 tries to made driver selection easier by second-guessing what type of device you have, and then only letting you choose from a list of compatible devices. But unfortunately this means the TS-30 cannot select the MDX-40 driver.
What to Try Instead
We have been informed that the following method works, but is quite complicated, and we are unable to provide further support.
You first need a Windows 7 computer.
Follow the steps in the sections above to connect the TS-30 successfully to the Windows 7 computer.
From the Roland Download Center page for the MDX-40A, download the MDX-40A Firmware updater.
Run the firmware updater. This will convert the TS-30 hardware into an MDX-40A.
Restart the TS-30 machine.
Now go to your Windows 10 64-bit computer.
Make sure the TS-30 is disconnected from the computer.
Choose 2.5D Driver and download the driver for Windows 10 64bit, and install this driver.
Choose VPanel for MDX-40A and download the Installer, and install this software. The VPanel software is used to manually control the machine on the computer.
Plug the TS-30 into the computer using the USB cable.
Go to Windows Start Menu > Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
If done successfully, the machine should be listed in the "Printers" section as an MDX-40A and should be online.
If it is listed in the "Unspecified" section, you should right-click on this and select Properties. Select the Hardware tab and click on Roland MDX-40A and then click Properties. Click the Change settings button on the Window that appears. Select the Driver tab and click Update Driver. You will be asked 'How do you want to search for drivers?', select 'Browse my computer for driver software', then 'Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer'. Select the 'Roland MDX-40A' driver from the list.
Output from TechSoft Design V3 or 2D Design V2 should now be possible via File > CNC Output with the CNC device: Roland MDX-40A selected.
